So apparently the tests I took at Dr. Goldstein's office came back showing that I had a "light growth of yeast" and thus must be treated for a yeast infection.
I don't know about you, but the very terminology strikes me as funny. When I think of yeast, I think of challah baking. So basically I'm imagining fizzy water and flour somehow getting it on down there. Hey, at least somebody's having fun.
Anyway, apparently there are many causes that can lead to getting yeast infections, ranging from poorly controlled diabetes (scary) to illness, stress and/or eating too many sugary foods (that's something I'm definitely guilty of). I've also heard that sometimes women who bathe in the baths provided at the mikvah (something I do) can get yeast infections that way.
Anyway, the plan is to treat it and then hope it doesn't recur. Vaginas are strange places. I sometimes want to do a Mrs. Frizzle - like trip where I could go on the Magic School Bus and explore mine; maybe then I could become more friendly with it.

Makes note to look up Mrs. Frizzle. --YCF
I have chronic yeast infections due to being on birth control. Good times. Apparently cutting down on sugar helps, as does plain yogurt (no sugar, with the probiotic stuff in it), both by eating it and, um, applying it topically (although I haven't been brave enough to try that, ask your doctor if yogurt is right for you, etc.). In my experience yeast infections also make it harder to get lubricated and have sex comfortably, so hopefully treating it will help on that count too. Good luck!
Yes, do look up Ms. Frizzle! Ahh, childhood memories. I think a youtube-fueled nostalgia break is in order...
Looked it up. I guess I had a flawed childhood. Not familiar with the Magic Schoolbus.
LOVE "ask your doctor if yogurt is right for you." lol
I think people also apply it topically to make it smell nice. I think I saw that on YouTube, actually. (Saw someone talking about it.) --YCF
Loved the reference to the Magic School Bus. I aced 9th grade science because of that show!
Wait, didn't we know this months ago? Wasn't that the cause of the "cuts" you were experiencing?
Either way, glad you'll be treating it. Be sure to take loads of probiotics (the actual vitamin-like capsules, though yogurt doesn't hurt).
Oh, it's doubtful you have diabetes, or even that the mikvah is to blame for the overgrowth. Your husband should be treated too so it isn't passed back and forth.
Candida's a fungus. No challah dough happening there.
And how are things going with the treatment he put you on? Any improvement?
I'll told my wife that you had been to see Dr. Goldstein. Her response was, "The person who sent us to him made us a deal that when we're having great sex all the time, we need to treat her and her husband out to dinner. We should get the same deal!"
No, you don't have to. I just thought it was funny.
Love the Mrs. Frizzle reference , it reminds me of when they go into to Ralphy to explore his cough.
Just found this blog... I've been married 18 months now and have not yet been able to penetrate at all... not even a finger. It is an interesting read. Everyday is hard.
havent read ur blog in a while.
would be nice to go into our bodies and see what really happens.
stay strong!
Hi! Hope you are having a good week. Uncomsumated marriage is rough--4 years, 28 days for my husband and I. I resorted to alcohol abuse to cope and gained 60+ pounds, which makes trying sex even more difficult :) Thanks for your blog SJG--it is of help to me.
Hope all is going well. And things are working out. I hope that your infection has healed and that you are on the road to recovery. Mikvahs were a major issue for me, in the end I got permission from a chassidic rabbi to stay away from the mikvah for a year while I did the surgery and took care of issues. And now I only get infections when Im pregnant.
